Diesel Fuel Conditioner
DFT #1500 "Hammerdown" is a multi-purpose diesel fuel conditioner *specifically designed to correct fuel related problems associated with the diesel engine. It is a unique blend of petrochemicals formulated specifically for today's diesel fuels. It is designed to maximize fuel performance while minimizing fuel problems. Since 1977, DFT #1500 has proved itself worldwide, both on land and in harsh marine environments.
DFT #1500 makes all fuels for diesel engines burn more efficiently, producing more power, while reducing CO, NOx and particulate (smoke) emissions. It removes and prevents hard carbon formation, a prime cause of reduced power and engine wear. It prevents the growth of bacteria and fungi that contaminate diesel fuels, controls gelling to 0 degrees F, stabilizes fuel, disperses water and sludge, and protects fuel systems and engine components from corrosion. DFT #1500 also improves the lubricity of fuels - a particularly important benefit when using low sulfur fuels, whose lubricity is often less than engine requirements.
Users routinely report that their diesel engine runs noticeably smoother and engine smoke stops after adding DFT #1500 to their fuel. They say that engine power is restored to "as new" levels. They report average reductions of 10% in fuel consumption and of 15 to 25% in maintenance costs. Independent tests confirm these claims.
DFT #1500 "Hammerdown" is totally compatible with all engines, filters, and fuel systems. It is nontoxic and noncaustic, contains no metals or alcohols, and requires no special handling, special storage, or disposal. It is gauranteed to contain no chemicals capable of harming any engine parts.
DFT #1500 is E.P.A. registered, U.S. Coast Guard approved, and certified for national defense fuels use.

Fuel Conditioners vs. Fuel Additives
Since 1977, DFT Hammerdown® Fuel Conditioners have been conditioning fuel without using fuel additives. Hammerdown® fuel conditioners are 100% organic petrochemicals specifically formulated to prevent fuel-related problems in internal combustion engines. Hammerdown® fuel conditioners are non-toxic, non-caustic, non-metallic, non-alcoholic, ashless dispersants designed to react with fuel in order to improve the chemical characteristics of fuel to achieve optimum engine performance.
The need for better refined, higher quality fuels is a recognized fact. Fuel companies are now marketing high-priced premium fuels fortified with additive packages in an attempt to combat the deteriorating quality of today's fuels. Engine manufacturers are now showing their concerns with the indiscriminate use of fuel additives:
CATERPILLAR:
"Additives can neutralize undesirable fuel properties. Some additives improve ignition quality. In general, Caterpillar discourages the use of fuel additives for No. 1 and No. 2 diesel fuel. There are two exceptions: One is the recommendation to use a cetane improver for direct injection engine if the cetane number is below 40. The second exception is the use of biocides to eliminate microorganisms in the fuel."
Diesel Fuels and your engine
bulletin #SEBD0717
DETROIT DIESEL CORPORATION:
"Detroit Diesel specifically prohibits the use of draining lubricating oil in diesel fuel. This practice will result in increased combustion deposits, reduced injector and filter life, and will adversely effect exhaust emissions."
The addition of gasoline to diesel fuel will create a serious fire hazard. The presence of gasoline in diesel fuel will reduce fuel cetane number and increase combustion temperatures. Tanks which contain such mixtures should be drained and cleaned as soon as possible.
Detroit Diesel will not be responsible for any detrimental effects which it determines resulted from the use of used engine oil or gasoline in diesel fuel."
The use of supplemental fuel additives does not necessarily void the engine warranty. However, repair expenses which result from fuel system or engine component malfunctions due to their use will not be covered. These products should be accompanied with performance data supporting their merit. It is not the policy of Detroit Diesel Corporation to test, evaluate, approve, or endorse such products."
Engine Requirements
Bulletin #7SE270 9205
GM, EMD DIVISION:
"The indiscriminate use of cetane improvers or other fuel additives should be limited until tests have established that there are no detrimental effects. Such tests would include the observation of engine wear, corrosion or excess deposits."
Fuel Oil Recommendations"
Section A-1, Equipment Specifications
Fuel additives are organic, inorganic or synthetic compounds designed to treat one fuel problem. They do not have the overall ability to improve fuel performance. Typically they contain alcohol, mineral spirits, boron compounds, and/or metal compounds.
Unlike fuel additives, Fuel Conditioners are multi-purpose organic compounds designed to improve fuel performance.

DFT Hammerdown® Fuel Conditioners have a 20 year, documented history of correcting all of these fuel problems.
No additive has the history or ability to prevent or correct as many fuel-related problems as Hammerdown® fuel conditioners.
In order to completely treat fuel like Hammerdown®, the user would have to use at least six or seven different additives. DFT #1500 offers the assurance of using normally supplied D2 to achieve results that surpass those gained by using expensive "premium" Diesel fuels.
DFT Hammerdown® Diesel Fuel Conditioner is E.P.A. Registered, Certified for National Defense Fuels Use, and U.S.C.G. Approved.Use of Hammerdown® fuel conditioners will not affect the warranty of Cummins engines if the user follows the manufacturers instructions*. Hammerdown® products are certified to have no chemicals capable of harming any engine part and are fully warranted by LV Petro, Inc.™

FUEL CONDITIONERS are multi-purpose organic compounds designed to improve fuel performance. They should prevent bacterial growth, dissipate water, prevent fuel system corrosion, dissolve gums, sludges & varnish, lubricate fuel system components, prevent carbon build-up, reduce emissions, restore engine power, and be compatible with all engine parts.
FUEL ADDITIVES are organic, inorganic, or synthetic compounds designed to treat one fuel problem. Typically they contain alcohol, mineral spirits, boron compounds, and/or metal compounds.
Effects of DFT #1500 on Microbiological Growth
Microbiological growth and infestations have become a major problem to diesel users. Algae/bacteria can have many adverse effects on diesel engines: jeopardize an engine's ability to function and can damage engines and fuel systems. Operational and maintenance problems attributed directly to microbiological growth or infestations include:
- Low Power
- Poor fuel economy
- Excessive engine smoking
- Blockage of fuel gauges and consequently pumping and metering problems
- Tank sealant degradation
- Pitting and corrosion of metal surfaces, leading to leaky fuel lines and storage tanks
- Higher level of hydrocarbons in exhaust-stack emissions
- Formation of slime and sludge in fuel tanks
- De-stabalization of fuel
The need for an efficient fuel treatment to prevent the growth of microorganisms in diesel fuel is a recognized fact. a total diesel fuel conditioner will prevent the growth of bacteria/algae in diesel fuel. Biocides will disinfect contaminated fuel, but they will not prevent the fuel from becoming re-contaminated, nor will they restore the quality of the fuel. A total fuel conditioner is needed. A fuel conditioner will remove the sludge and slime from a fuel system, remove water from a fuel system ( the environment in which microorganisms live), stabilize the fuel, increase the efficiency of the fuel, improve fuel combustion to produce more power, and reduce emissions.
DFT #1500 "Hammerdown" Diesel Fuel Conditioner is a total fuel conditioner and the solution to microbial infestation and growth. DFT #1500 has over 20 years of documented history in preventing microbiological infestations. DFT #1500 is E.P.A. registered, U.S.C.G. approved, and certified for national defense fuels use. DFT #1500 removes microorganisms from the fuel and prevents recontamination of the fuel. Unlike the leadingbiocides, DFT #1500 is 100% organic. Therefore, it is nontoxic, noncaustic, nonhazardous, and completely safe for any engine or engine part. DFT #1500 does not require special handling procedures, special storage, or disposal. In addition to its documented ability to control and prevent algae/bacteria growth, DFT #1500 offers the user other benefits; removing and preventing power wasting deposits, increases fuel combustion efficiency (without using combustion enhancers such as Amyl Nitrates), disperses fuel and sludge from fuel system, restoring engine power to design parameters, improving fuel lubricity, preventing bacteria and fungus growth, and reducing CO, NOx, and hydrocarbon emmisions. These benefits make DFT #1500 the right choice for solving microbiological problems.
USCGC Key Largo
1. On 23 Jan 1989 this unit purchased a product from LV PETRO called Hammerdown. Hammerdown is a fuel oil additive designed to increase fuel oil cetane level and clean fuel systems. This product also aids in removing moisture and suspended particles from fuel.
The main reason this unit started using Hammerdown was because of a severe smoking problem we were having with the main diesel engines. Paxman diesels require a 54 cetane fuel oil for best performance. The best cetane rating this unit has been able to purchase locally is 43 cetane. The smoking problem has been so bad at times that during mooring stations personnel could not see mooring lines, also the engine room could not be manned because of the smoke. This unit personnel had tried numerous tests to solve the smoking problem, which by the way hospitalized one person because of carbon monoxide poisoning.
2. On 26 Jan 1989 I received our order of Hammerdown and treated the fuel system as per manufacturers instructions. Shortly after treatment we ran a four day patrol at which time we made several noticeable observations. We had been noticing an increasing knock, which sounded like a valve or fuel knock. Our first day of the patrol after treating the knocking sound went away. On the third day of the patrol, while operating on the port engine only, we attempted to start the starboard main engine. Upon light-off the engine started blowing excessive white smoke and running very rough, investigation showed both primary and secondary filters clogged with suspended carbon and water. Unit engineers changed all filters at that time and upon light-off found that the engine had quit smoking and that the engine seemed to be idling better than ever before. We checked our individual cylinder pyrometers and found that sure enough, the engine was running much better at idle.We changed all main engine and s/s generator filters at that time and have not had to change filters since that time.
On 26 Feb 1989 MKC Tom Renkin reported on board as my relief. At this time we got underway for a five day patrol and for relief familiarity. MKC Renkin had a chance to see how well all machinery ran. After that patrol this unit topped off on fuel oil from our usual source but intentionally did not treat as before because we wanted to observe the operation of the mains.
3. I strongly recommend that the other WPBS of this class be authorized to try this product for tests, because on 15 Mar 1989 this unit got underway to move the vessel to downtown Savannah, at which time the smoking returned to its original severity. Because of this situation this unit has decided to continue treating the fuel with Hammerdown.
